SII Workshop 2026

→ Europe/London
Description

SII Workshop 2026

The workshop Stellar Intensity Interferometry aims at gathering researchers involved in the modern revival of intensity interferometry, the science cases in which it will be competitive, its enabling technologies (detectors, photonics…) and closely related interferometric techniques.

It combines the previous successful workshops

The workshop will be held at the H10 Taburiente Playa, La Palma (Spain) from October 5-9, 2026. It is being organized jointly by CIEMAT and IPARCOS (UCM).

No schedule is yet available, but you can expect a similar schedule as previous meetings.

Questions to be answered within the workshop

  • What will be the potential of the next generation of Intensity Interferometers?
  • Which are the technical milestones needed to achieve these objectives?
  • Which parameter space/scientific topics Intensity Interferometry can complement Amplitude Interferometry?

Topics include

  • History of Stellar Intensity Interferometry (SII)
  • Science exploitation of intensity interferometers, such as fundamental parameters of OB stars, fast rotators, close binaries or white dwarfs.
  • Use of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) as SII
  • Use of optical Telescopes and telescope arrays for SII
  • Ultra fast photon detectors and instrumentation
  • Comparison to and synergies with amplitude interferometry
  • Quantum Optics with Intensity Interferometry
  • Image Reconstruction & Advanced Methods

Some confirmed attendees (in alphabetical order)

  • Jonathan Biteau
  • Colin Carlile
  • Juan Cortina
  • Christopher Ingenhütt
  • Robin Kaiser
  • Prasenjit Saha
  • Lucijana Stanic
  • Luca Zampieri
  • Joachim von Zanthier

Abstract submission

Please submit your abstract for either a presentation or a poster right away. Abstract submission ends the 8th of June. Acceptance confirmation will be done as soon as possible, always before July 1st.

Each participant is invited to present a poster. There are very limited spots for contributed talks available. If talks end up not being possible, please consider presenting it as a poster.

Registration

Registration is currently open.

The conference fee (350€) covers:

  • Attendance of the workshop
  • Day visit to Observatorio Roque de los Muchachos
  • Coffee breaks
  • Conference dinner

Once you register and pay the fee, you will receive a code to get a 10% discount at the Taburiente Hotel. We recommend the "all inclusive" option, as that way we will maximize the amount of time we can spend for discussion. Also, remember to register in this indico page, as it will be the one used during the meeting.

Preliminary schedule:

Scientific Organizing Committee

Irene Jiménez (MPI Munich)
Gisela Anton (ECAP)
Robin Kaiser (CNRS / Université de la Côte d’Azur)
Joachim von Zanthier (QOQI)

General recommendation

La Palma is a very popular tourist destination, and the Taburiente Hotel did not allow us to reserve rooms for the meeting. The SOC will communicate to the speakers at the earliest time possible if their contributions are accepted as a talk, but we strongly recommend to reserve a room as soon as possible, to ensure we can all share the same space (which is the way these meetings have been conceived).

If you need any help or have any question, please contact Tarek (tarek.hassan@ciemat.es).
